Blog Tour Stop for J. E. Klimov The Aeonians

Today, I have the opportunity to host J.E. Klimov on their new release. You’ll get an interview and some book info and it will be a blast, so come on in, put up your feet, and get ready to have some fun.

J’s new release, The Aeonians, will take you on a wild ride for sure. It’s a fantasy novel that I’ve had the pleasure of reading in its early stages and I can’t wait to get my hands on it again!

AeoniansCover

Isabel Deran only wants to practice archery with the castle guards, and that is the last thing expected from an elegant Princess. Living in the shadow of her late sister, Victoria, she is next in line to receive the ro

yal armlet that is embedded with four stones: an opal, a sapphire, an amber, and a ruby. It is a revered family heirloom with the power of the elements passed down from mother to daughter.

However, an evil, once thought to be sealed away in a prison in which time does not pass, breaks free with an army that swarms the castle and wrecks havoc over the kingdom in search for the magical armlet. They are known as the Aeonians. When they kidnap Isabel and place their hands on it, the precious stones vanish.

Isabel is now trapped in a race against time to locate her stones of power with the head of the Aeonian army, Bence Brechenhad, stalking her like a shadow. With the help of her trusty weapon, the sai, she fights her way through seemingly impossible trials and fearsome monsters in order to restore peace in her kingdom.

Sounds pretty good, right? I think so!! Seriously, I can’t wait to read it!

Now, let’s check out the interview with the amazing author!

1.      What made you want to become a writer?

Believe it or not, my aspirations were not in writing at first. I was an artist who loved sketching and inking. I even created my own graphic novels. (On folded, cut, plain paper…) As time passed, I wanted another medium to share my stories, and after NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), I was hooked and wanted to become an established author! To be able to share stories and inspire others is truly rewarding.

2.      What inspires you?

I’m having a hard time finding inspiration these days. Most of my ideas were spun from my high school days where my imagination was limitless.

However, I now try to draw from my experiences from my travels: China, Taiwan, Japan, autumn in New Hampshire, and more. I drink in the environment and take mental notes. Also, The Legend of Zelda franchise. (I’m sure those that have been following me are sick of my Zelda references.) I guess the central theme is beautiful landscapes that beg for adventure.

3.      Are any of your characters from The Aeonians inspired by people you know?

I did model Isabel a bit after myself; however, it’s actually very hard to do that. During the revision process, I distanced her persona from me a little, so Isabel can have a personality all her own. Other than that, this novel has new, unique creations. There are other novel ideas where characters are based off some really wonderful friends though.

4. What is your writing process like?

I’m still figuring it out! I was a “pantser” when writing The Aeonians. (For those that don’t know, the term “pantser” is one that writes on the fly!) Now, I am a bit more organized. I always find a quiet corner, preferably in a café that sells caffeinated drinks, listen to soundtracks, and write. In the sequel, my current work in progress, I created a general outline of my plot down to the chapter. From that, I write details as I go.

5.      How did you find the perfect editor?

You know, I struggled with this. As this was my first novel, I had no idea how to go about this. Do I empty my wallet or ask friends etc? I ended up with a blend of both. I had a few friends take a look, then had it rigorously workshopped on Scribophile.com, then I hired a freelance editor for proofreading who offered an affordable price. My publisher, Silver Leaf Books, also offered professional editing. It was definitely a learning curve!

6.      Tell me about your story. Your characters.

The challenge with telling people about my story is that I don’t know when to stop! So, I’ll give it my best: The story takes place on a mystical island named Deran, which is run by a matriarchal system. When Princess Victoria passes away, her older sister Isabel is next in line to receive the royal armlet that contains four precious stones that grants the power of the elements. While Isabel struggles with her confidence, an imprisoned dark force breaks free from a prison in which time does not pass. Their army, the Aeonians, storms the castle and tries to obtain this coveted armlet. Not to give the rest of the plot away, chaos ensues. Isabel must fight to retrieve her precious stones that fled her armlet with the help of her weapon, the sai, while the head of the Aeonian army is at her heels.

Princess Isabel is not the typical princess. She is an awkward tomboy with confidence issues. The main antagonist is Bence Brechenhad, who is sarcastic, brooding, and calculating. While his twin brother, Farid, follows instructions rigidly, Bence tends to take matters into his own hands. Other than humans, I have six other species that live in Deran, four of which reside in their own city. I take pride in that these species are my own creation: from reptilian-like creatures the size of boulders to gilled fur-balls with floppy ears.

7.      Are you working on anything else right now? If so, can you tell us a little about it?

I am working on two things at the moment. Firstly, I am working on the sequel to The Aeonians, named The Shadow Warrior. I can’t say too much about it without giving it away, but it takes place after the Aeonian War. Readers will get to see more of the world beyond Deran. The second project is a fairy tale re-telling short story for the next installment of the Just-Us-League Anthology!

8. Do you write in absolute silence or do you have the TV or radio on while you write?

I need music. Not just any music, though. For some reason, I can’t have any vocals in it- too distracting. Movie scores and gaming soundtracks help me focus and even help spark some inspiration.

9. Do you have an Aeonians inspired playlist?

Sigh. I don’t. I think it would be pretty awesome if I did…

It Starts With L full wrap

Excerpt:
Steam could shoot from Arielle’s ears at any minute. She stomped forward until she came face to face with Blake, whose face lit up when she approached. He looked even more grateful for the interruption than her. “Hey, Ari. I was wondering where you were.”
“I’m here. It’s hard to get around in this place, though.”
Karla glared daggers at her. Arielle smiled back at her. “Hey Karla. Nice to see you again.”
“Oh, please. Like you mean that. And why would I want some fat girl happy to see me?”
Blake stepped between Arielle and Karla, keeping his back to Arielle. “Here we go again. If you can’t be nice to my date, don’t talk to me.”
Karla’s mouth fell open. “Your date?”
“Yeah. You heard me. My date. So how about you stop making fun of her.” Blake crossed his arms over his stomach. Arielle peered around him with a look of triumph on her face, she couldn’t help it. It was the first time anyone had ever stood up to Karla for her, minus Jess. Jess always had Arielle’s back.
Karla rolled her eyes. “I can’t believe you’d pick that over this.” She gestured to herself like Vanna White on Wheel of Fortune.
Blake pulled Arielle in front of him. “This is prettier than you will ever be.”
“Okay.” Karla laughed. “Guess you’re as much of a freak as she is. Hope you two freaks find all kinds of freaky happiness together.” Then she walked away, her head held even higher than before.

Five Mistakes Writers Make When Querying

Hi guys! Today, I wanted to talk about some mistakes we writers make when querying. Trust me, I can definitely give some insight on this topic as I’ve sent over 200 queries out. Most ended in rejection. But, there is a proper etiquette to follow and we are going to talk about that today.

  1. Always address your query letter to someone. And please, spell their name right. If you are querying an agent and you say Mr. Hope and it should have been Ms…this is a huge no-no. It only takes a second to read over your email before you hit send.
  2. Don’t go on and on about yourself. Agents and publishers want to know about the book you’re writing. They don’t want a paragraph about the book and four paragraphs about you. It’s great if you have won awards of have books out there in the bookverse. Share that. But don’t tell them you have a cat name Mr. Sniffles and constantly have to wipe his nose with a tissue.
  3. Don’t query as if your main character is the one sending the email. This is a big no. Agents and Publishers want to read about your book from your perspective. When they get into the sample chapters, the character can take over, but not in the query letter.
  4. Keep it simple and short. Make it intriguing enough for them to want to keep reading, but stay true to your story. No agent or editor will want to be captivated by a query and go on to read the sample chapters only to find the query was nothing like the story.
  5. My final piece of advice is this. Get people to read your query before you send it out. Get opinions. Critique partners help tremendously. A second set of eyes can take your query letter from subpar to extraordinary. Get that feedback. And do your research. Don’t send a query to an agent looking for contemporary when you’re writing an epic fantasy. It’s a waste of time for the agent and for you.

If you do your homework and take your time writing the letter, you’ll have no problem getting requests from agents or publishers. But, before you sign a contract with anyone, make sure they are a perfect fit for what you’re looking for in representation. An agent is someone you work very close with so you have to have a good relationship and be able to get along. And same with a publisher. And, remember, keep your chin out even when you don’t get the outcome you were expecting. Because even if you do all the research and find the one you think will be a perfect match, they still might say no. But never, ever give up. Fight to make your dreams come true. I know you can do it!
